Hill was born on December 17, 1944, in Blackley, a small town outside Manchester, England. His father was a miner, and his mother worked in a textile factory. Hill showed an interest in acting from a young age, and he joined the Oldham Theatre Workshop at the age of 16.

After completing his national service, Hill worked as a teacher for several years before pursuing acting full-time. He made his film debut in 1977 in The Battle of Billy's Pond, and he went on to appear in over 100 films and television shows throughout his career.

Hill's most memorable roles include Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron's Titanic (1997), and King Théoden in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003). He also appeared in films such as Gandhi (1982), A Passage to India (1984), Full Metal Jacket (1987), and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996).

Hill was a highly respected actor, and his death is a great loss to the film industry. He will be remembered for his powerful performances and his ability to bring depth and humanity to his characters.
