Sea Otters Return to the Vancouver Aquarium
Vancouver Aquarium welcomes back sea otters
The Vancouver Aquarium is thrilled to announce the return of sea otters to its exhibits. After a five-year absence, these playful and charismatic animals are back to delight visitors of all ages.
The two new sea otters, a male and female named Umi and Kiska, arrived at the Vancouver Aquarium in May 2023. They were rescued as pups from the Alaskan coastline and have been rehabilitated at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Umi and Kiska are now healthy and thriving, and they are excited to meet their new home and visitors.
The importance of sea otters
Sea otters are an important part of the marine ecosystem. They prey on sea urchins, which helps to keep kelp forests healthy. Kelp forests provide food and shelter for a variety of other marine animals, making them a vital part of the ecosystem.
In addition to their ecological importance, sea otters are also beloved by humans for their playful and curious nature. They are often seen floating on their backs, using their paws to eat and groom themselves. Sea otters are also very social animals, and they often form close bonds with their family and friends.
Visiting the sea otters at the Vancouver Aquarium
Visitors to the Vancouver Aquarium can see Umi and Kiska in the new Sea Otter Exhibit. The exhibit is designed to provide the otters with a stimulating and natural environment. There is a large pool for swimming and diving, as well as rocks and logs for climbing and playing.
