Independent Presidential Candidate Speaks Openly About His Vocal Condition

Spasmodic Dysphonia Causes Involuntary Muscle Spasms in the Voice Box

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate in the US presidential race, has been speaking candidly about his gravelly voice. In a recent interview, Kennedy revealed that he was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia around 1996. This rare neurological disorder causes involuntary muscle spasms in the voice box, resulting in a raspy or strained voice.

Kennedy explained that he first noticed a change in his voice in his early 40s. At first, he attributed it to aging or vocal strain. However, as the problem persisted, he sought medical attention and was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia.

Spasmodic dysphonia is a chronic condition that affects the muscles that control the voice box. The spasms can cause the voice to sound raspy, strained, or breathy. The condition can interfere with speech, singing, and other vocal activities.
