100 Miles Away In Bakersfield

Magnitude 4.4 Quake Followed by Two 2.1 Magnitude Aftershock

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake centered in El Sereno rattled the Los Angeles area Monday afternoon, just two minutes after a 2.1 magnitude foreshock. The quake was felt more than 100 miles away in Bakersfield.

The earthquake struck at 3:49 p.m. PT, according to the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter was located about 7 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, near the intersection of the 10 and 60 freeways.

The quake was followed by two 2.1 magnitude aftershocks, which occurred at 3:51 p.m. and 3:53 p.m. PT.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the earthquake caused widespread shaking. The shaking was felt in downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Orange County.

The earthquake comes just over a week after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Ridgecrest, California. That earthquake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the Ridgecrest area.

Geologists are urging residents to be prepared for aftershocks, which can occur for days, weeks, or even months after a major earthquake.
