Mexican Drug Trafficking Cartel Member to Be Extradited

Exclusive: El Chapo's Son to Face Charges in U.S.

State Department Offers Reward for Information Leading to Capture

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of State has announced a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, also known as El Chapo, a high-level member of the Mexican drug trafficking organization the Sinaloa Cartel. Guzmán, a Mexican citizen born on April 4, 1957, is considered one of the most notorious drug lords in the world.

The State Department's announcement comes after Guzmán's son, Ovidio Guzmán López, was arrested in Mexico on January 5, 2023. López is facing charges in the United States, along with his brother, Joaquín Guzmán López, for alleged involvement in the cartel's drug trafficking operations.

The Sinaloa Cartel is responsible for trafficking vast quantities of drugs into the United States. The U.S. government has long been working to dismantle the cartel and bring its leaders to justice. The extradition of El Chapo to the United States would be a major victory in this effort.
