Andy Murray: Wimbledon and Olympic hopes hang in balance

Tennis star to make decision on farewell appearance as late as possible

Murray says it is more likely he will retire after the US Open

Andy Murray has admitted that he may not be able to play at Wimbledon or the Olympics this year.

The 35-year-old is still recovering from hip surgery and has not played a competitive match since last year's Wimbledon.

Murray says he will make a decision on whether to play at Wimbledon as late as possible.

"I'm going to try and give myself the best possible chance to play at Wimbledon and the Olympics," Murray said. "But I'm also aware that it's a long shot.

"I'm not going to put myself through the pain and suffering if I don't think I can be competitive."

Murray has won Wimbledon twice, in 2013 and 2016. He is also a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold in singles at the 2012 London Games and 2016 Rio Games.

If Murray does not play at Wimbledon, it is likely that he will retire after the US Open.

"I've had a great career and I'm proud of what I've achieved," Murray said. "But I'm also realistic about my age and my body.

"I know that I can't play forever, and I want to go out on my own terms."
